Why was a Safety Filter added?

At Top.gg, one of our biggest priorities is to ensure our platform is safe for all age groups to search and discover communities that are relevant and suitable for everyone. While we have specific guidelines in place disallowing inappropriate content (such as explicitly sexual imagery), the safety filter aims to hide servers that are more suited to a more mature audience.

Before launching this feature, we gathered a lot of user feedback regarding their discovery experience on Top.gg. The Safety Filter serves as a feature to empower users to find communities fitting to their expectations and provide results that are safe for work.

How do I use the Safety Filter?

:warning:By default, the Safety filter will be toggled on when logged out, meaning all mature content will be filtered out.

To turn it on or off, head to the top right corner on any page and click your avatar. This should then open a navigation menu.

From here, you should be able to toggle the Safety Filter accordingly; and confirm that you are 18 or older by clicking "Yes, I’m over 18".  Once you have done so, you should be able to see servers that have been flagged as mature when searching for specific terms. Otherwise, if you click "No, thank you", you will return back to the original page.

Once you’ve turned the Safety Filter off, you’ll find that these settings are saved for your next visit to Top.gg!

How does the Safety Filter work, and how do you identify content as “Mature”?

Content caught in the safety filter will not appear in Top, Trending, or the Categories lists. If the Safety Filter toggle has been marked off and you search for specific terms, these communities will appear.

Content may be flagged as mature if it includes, but is not limited to:

  • Your Discord server contains content with profanity, nudity, pornography, or other sexual content which a reasonable user would potentially not want to view in a public or private setting.

  • Dating-oriented servers that require users to be 18 or above to participate

  • Your server listing mentions terms, or utilises tags that indicate a more mature audience

  • Discord has flagged your server as NSFW via their API

  • Our Moderation team has flagged your server as “Mature”

However, it is important to reiterate that we do not allow NSFW content on Top.gg. For more information on what we allow, please review our Bot and Server Entity Guidelines

Communities behind the Safety Filter

Communities that we consider to be mature can only be seen by users who agree to see them by disabling their safety filter, agreeing that they are 18 years old or older and are willing to see mature content. On this page is where all of these communities are listed in one place, so that users can find them without having to search the rest of the site.

Help! My server has been flagged as mature, but it’s not!

Please review the guidelines in the section above on possible reasons why it may have been flagged as mature. If you truly believe that your server should not be considered mature, feel free to reach out to us at support@top.gg.
